Spring is in full flow as taps go metric

There are signs of spring everywhere, but not unwanted ones from the taps this time . A number of plot holders have struggled to use the standpipes around the site due to them being old taps. The imperial threads were not working with new hose fitments. So the Chair and Secretary have gone round them all (with appropriate COVID safety measures) and put on new taps. Rules remain in place that they are not to be used to water plots from.

The maintenance and up-grading of the allotment site is self-managed by the Weaste Allotments & Gardens Association that leases the allotment from the Salford Council. The Committee Members, who are volunteers, have various skills which are used throughout the year to keep the site going as effectively as possible. They are often joined by other plot holders to benefit the whole community. This is restricted at the moment due to COVID measures.

No dig and mulching

Plot holders are encouraged to be careful about creating plots that harvest water. Each has a water butt to fill watering cans from so that plants are watered at the roots as and when required. Gutters and drainpipes from shed roofs are often in full flow filling more water butts.

A number of pot holders have been experimenting with no dig, covering the ground with cardboard, then a mulch and planting through that. The last delivery of manure at the North end of the site is being used up to enable an upgrade to the bays next month. Wood chip is also delivered which helps create paths without the use of concrete slabs. All useful to try to minimise the need for watering from the mains. The last threat of a total hose-pipe ban in Manchester was in July 2018, and not surprisingly it did not materialise. Why? Well the rains came just in time.

Frog courtship

A number of plot holders have ponds on their plots too. These naturally fill from the rains. It is great for creating a ‘safe space’ for the wildlife to be. Water boatman and other insects are there and it gives bees a place to find water safely on leaves. Ponds are not filled from the hose pipes, but may need topping up from the rain water collected.

Coronavirus still in full flow

In other news the Manchester Nightingale Hospital has not so far been needed despite the high level of Covid-19 cases in our area. Another regulation has been passed allowing garden centres and recycling centres to re-open. Tending an allotment remains allowable subject to social distancing measures being in place and maintained.

The allotment continues to provide disinfectant at the gate, hand gel in the community room, and encourages hand washing in the toilets. Tools are not to be shared without the use of gloves. People are asked to maintain a safe distance from their neighbouring plot holder and others at the entrance or when using the community hut. Be aware of your neighbour’s situation and help them safely where you can. Some are not able to attend their plots at this time when growing should be in full flow.
