We are trying to grow and develop with the changes that we are seeing in the local population to provide different plot sizes. Plot holders can introduce their own methods of planting to increase the height of the soil for inclusive and accessible growing that works for them.

Many  plots have been divided to reduce the growing space that needs to be tended by a plot holder. This helps those that have less energy or time to remain productive with their plots.  We recognise that parent and child care or working habits change, also those with increasing health challenges may wish to remain part of the allotment community and to do so need to manage a smaller area.

Plot holders can create raised beds and trugs on full and half plots which will enable more people to consider the joys and health benefits of producing their own vegetables and fruit. Covering and clearing plots, providing set up systems for irrigation and composting requires the support of local businesses, grant providers, fund-raisers plus the talents and time of our existing plot holder community to support. The waiting list continues to grow and many wish to have smaller growing spaces to enable them to give the time required to grow and keep a plot clear of weeds throughout the year.

In addition the effects of climate change are seeing more rain and winds than ever before causing havoc to structures and the ground. Drainage is a new skill that allotment plot holders may need to acquire, or a cheap and effective way of creating  beds and paths. This causes even greater challenges for those with reduced mobility or energy capacity.

The Committee would love to hear from Salford based community groups who would like to be involved with the evolution of a more accessible space. It may be that you want somewhere to meet as a safe space to do an activity with your users which is good for mental and physical health. You may be a gardener who wants to be involved with social prescribing, but need a plot to do that. We are working on creating a more accessible infrastructure within the limitations of this being an  allotment site.  We will be looking for advice with regard to the potential improvements to the communal areas  on the allotment.
